How to make a drawing with a transparent background

A transparent background lets your drawing sit on top of another design without a white box around it. It is useful for icons, annotations, overlays, and simple presentation graphics.

How to export with transparency

  1. Open PlainCanvas.
  2. Set Background to Transparent.
  3. Draw your lines, shapes, or notes.
  4. Click Save PNG.

When transparency helps

Transparent drawings work well on slides, screenshots, product mockups, and social graphics. They are also useful when you want to draw a quick arrow, circle, or hand-drawn label and place it over another image.

When white background is better

Use a white background for worksheets, printable notes, and images that will be shared in apps with unknown backgrounds. Transparent drawings can be hard to see if the line color is similar to the destination background.

Readability tip

Before exporting, switch between light and dark backgrounds mentally. A black line works on white, but may disappear on a dark slide. If the drawing will be reused, choose a color with enough contrast.
