How to add text to an online drawing
Text labels make quick sketches easier to understand. Use them for arrows, diagram steps, classroom notes, simple UI mockups, and exported PNG images that need short explanations.
Use short labels
A drawing label should explain the object near it, not become a paragraph. One to five words is usually enough. If a sketch needs more detail, add the detail in the document, slide, or message where the image will be used.
Place labels after the main drawing
Draw the rough structure first, then switch to the Text tool. Type the label in the Text Label field and click the canvas where the label should appear. This keeps the drawing process fast and prevents labels from getting in the way too early.
Make text readable after export
- Increase the brush size before placing text if the image will be shown in a presentation.
- Use dark text on light backgrounds and light text on dark backgrounds.
- Leave space around labels so they do not touch lines or shapes.
- Export the final drawing as a PNG after checking the label positions.
Common labeled drawing ideas
PlainCanvas works well for quick process labels, room notes, simple arrows, study diagrams, issue screenshots redrawn as sketches, and rough product ideas. For long formatted text blocks, use a document editor instead.
